Waxing Moon in Gemini
1 January - 2 January 2026
The New Year kicks off with the moon in the sign of Gemini - which embodies curiosity, adaptability, communication, intellect, and exploration. It is a perfect time to start the gardening year by doing some research, investigating different gardening techniques, learning about new plants, and drafting ideas and plans for your garden patch. These days are the most favorable time for sowing and planting - particularly flowers and flowering herbs.
Full Moon in Cancer
on 3 January 2026
The January Full Moon (Fire Moon) is in Cancer. Use this time to embrace the traits of the Cancer sign and be more nurturing and connected to nature. Cancer has a strong instinct to protect - so now would be a good time to investigate your garden to see what needs to be shielded from possible Summer storms, floods, droughts, or bushfires. This assistance must now be applied to our gardening methods in order for the plants to survive the hot Summer months. It is also an excellent time to fertilize plants with natural fertilizers, worm tea, and rich healthy compost. It is a good day to mow the lawn - and don't forget to water those indoor house plants.
Waning Moon moving from
Leo through to Capricorn
5 January to 18 January 2026
Use this period during waning moon to give the yard a good tidy before the upcoming BBQs and gatherings with family and friends over the Summer months. It is a great time to finish those garden projects that have been stalled for some time. The best time to mow the yard, prune hedges, and weed garden beds is during the Virgo transit (7th & 8Th January) and the Capricorn transit (17th & 18th January).
New Moon in Aquarius
on 19 January 2026
The first New Moon of 2026 is in the zodiac sign of Aquarius. This sign is renowned for its independent and innovative approach to gardening - particularly with watering systems and water preservation methods. Try growing hardy, drought tolerant plants in your garden; or incorporating plants that effectively act as a fire break on your property. It is a good time to plant Summer root drops and flowering plants.
Waxing moon moving from Aquarius through to Cancer
20 to 31 January 2026
Use this energetic period of the waxing moon during the end of January to be productive in your garden. Now is the opportune time to start a new garden task, reinvigorate soils in vegetable garden beds with fresh compost, tend to forgotten indoor house plants, sow new leafy Summer crops, and harvest and preserve fruits.
