March

Full Moon in Virgo &
Total Lunar Eclipse on
3 March 2026
It is the start of the Autumn Season - and what better way to kick off the highly productive and busy gardening Season but with a Total Lunar Eclipse of a Full Moon in Virgo. This event is also known as the 'Blood Moon' of the Autumn Harvest Season. In ancient agriculture practices, it marked a significant point between the First Harvest (Lammas / Lughnasadh Sabbat) and the Second Harvest / Great Harvest (Mabon Sabbat). This first Full Moon of Autumn alerted farmers that they only had approximately two to three weeks remaining to complete their harvest, gather resources, and select the livestock to be slaughtered (to be smoked, salted, dried, or frozen) before 18-21 March. After this, farmers would begin the resource preparation and food preserving processes so the household could survive the long, cold, six months ahead. In contemporary society, the Full Moon under the sign of 'work-orientated' Virgo is generally considered a good time for performing most garden related activities connected with sowing, transplanting and planting. It is also favorable time to fertilize plants and combat pests with natural sprays.
Waning Moon moving from
Sagittarius through to Pisces
11 March to 17 March 2026
Use this period during waning moon to prepare garden beds with healthy soil, good manure, and rich compost for the upcoming busy gardening months of Autumn. These Zodiac signs are most favorable time for sowing and planting - perfect days to plant out seedlings to start your Autumn / Winter crops. projects and clean up the garden shed in readiness. The best time to weed the garden is with Capricorn influence on the 13th, 14th, and give the garden a goody tidy, prune, and mow the yard on 17th, 18th with Pisces's energy.
New Moon in Pisces
18 March 2026
The New Moon in the water sign of Pisces heralds the need to consider your watering and irrigation methods in your garden - this includes in particular to houseplants. Are the watering methods working? What can be improved?
Waxing moon moving from Aries through to Virgo
20 to 31 March 2026
The waxing moon begins in the determined and 'gung-ho' sign of Aries. This energetic period is the opportune time to start new garden tasks. It is also excellent time to gather, preserve, and freeze fruits and vegetables for storage during the colder months. Make the most of this time to sow and plant flowers, flowering herbs, and leafy vegetables. It is also great moment for examining your garden design and layout (or perhaps attend a Permaculture Design Course to learn more).
